{"id":511,"date":"2018-06-26T00:55:32","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T00:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ufuact.asn.au\/?p=511"},"modified":"2018-06-26T01:06:08","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T01:06:08","slug":"confusion-reigns-about-the-use-of-pfas-and-its-effects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ufuact.asn.au\/?p=511","title":{"rendered":"Confusion reigns about the use of PFAS and its effects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Concerns expressed by the United Firefighters&#8217; Union and many others about the uncertainties surrounding the use and residual effects of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the ACT and beyond continue to grow.<\/p>\n<p>The latest story in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/national\/act\/act-fire-and-rescue-backtracks-on-comments-about-pfas-still-being-carried-on-trucks-20180625-p4znnp.html\">the Canberra Times of 26 June 2018<\/a> reports on confusion within the Emergency Services Agency about whether fire fighting trucks carry extinguishers with the toxic PFAS foam, with agency head Dominic Lane suggesting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/national\/act\/toxic-pfas-foam-carried-by-act-fire-trucks-13-years-after-phase-out-20180618-p4zm6f.html\">on 25 June<\/a> they do and ACT Fire &amp; Rescue said to be &#8216;backtracking&#8217; on this claim.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, reports of the potentially harmful effects of the chemical contaminants found in fire-fighting foam continue to surface, such as in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/national\/report-into-toxic-chemicals-finds-pfas-worse-than-thought-20180621-p4zmy8.html\">the United States<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/national\/victoria\/toxic-fears-farmers-warned-not-to-eat-the-beef-they-sell-20180622-p4zn32.html\">in Victoria&#8217;s Gippsland region<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Previously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/national\/act\/act-govt-nets-2m-selling-contaminated-site-for-child-care-centre-20180615-p4zlrm.html\">the Canberra Times, on 17 June,<\/a> reported on concerns that &#8220;contamination from toxic chemicals was discovered at the former Charnwood fire station before the ACT government netted $2 million by re-zoning the land and selling it to become a child care centre.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Concerns expressed by the United Firefighters&#8217; Union and many others about the uncertainties surrounding the use and residual effects of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the ACT and beyond continue to grow.
